Hola Amigas & Amigos,
What a full month July has been. First of all getting to spend the 4th of July in Mexico with my American, Canadian and Mexican Amigos is very liberating with margaritas and the Star Spangled Banner waving from our condo at Bahia Delfin. To join in the celebration of our Nation’s Birthday and the 8th year anniversary of owning an incredible home on the Sea of Cortez. Very fortunate indeed we are and to have such friends as Abby, Kim, Gerie, Tony, Dave, Mari, Jim, Jana, Rachelle, Mark, Jay, Mary, Jeff, Kelly, John, Trish, Colleen, Joe, Marcia, Mike and many more to share our love of the beach lifestyle, the sea, the tequila, the culture and the Mexican People.
Ever been to a 50 Shades of Grey party? Nope, neither had I until this one, didn’t even know they existed; however, neighbor Tina had one and I was lucky enough to be invited. You’re gonna love the photos at the end of this Blog, it is the best way to describe the party. But, first You must read the entire Blog, no fair, skipping to the end to see the pictures.
"Be assured, that a touch of madness occurred, in order for an incredible piece of art to have been created." rico austin 7/28/2015; This quote by Rico has been used by fellow Author & Amigo Michael G. Edwards for the opening of Chapter 8 in his latest novel of which he is currently working on, "The Shadow in the Doorway," Detective Mike Rock Adventure #6 By Michael G. Edwards Author Michael Edwards also has Rico Austin playing a real life character as a best selling Author and Tequila Distillery Owner in the same book, appearing in several different chapters.
Phil Niekro, what an incredible human being and ball player. I was fortunate to have drawn Mr. Knuckleball (Knucksie!) himself as our celebrity golf partner in the “Dry Heat Desert Classic” golf tourney, held in Scottsdale, AZ in July.
I took a few selfies with Mr. Niekro! What an incredible Friday at Orange Tree Golf Resort with MBL Hall of Famer Phil Niekro - Mr. Knuckleball himself ak (Knucksie!) for the Dry Heat Classic Golf Tourney! Phil Niekro's 121 career victories after the age of 40 is a major league record; Niekro's 318 career victories are the most by a knuckleball pitcher and he ranks 16th on the overall all-time wins list. He also won the National League (NL) Gold Glove Award five times. Niekro pitched 20 seasons for the Milwaukee Brewers and Atlanta Braves. During his tenure with Atlanta, Niekro was selected for five All-Star Teams, led the league in victories twice and earned run average once. Knucksie (his nickname) was also key to the only two division titles Atlanta won before 1991.
Phil and his brother, Joe Niekro together amassed 539 wins, the most combined wins by brothers in Major League Baseball history. Phil’s longevity is attributed to the Knuckleball, which is a difficult pitch to master, but is easy on the arm and often baffles hitters due to its unpredictable trajectory. Turns out we dress the same and like to have our pictures taken with the same beautiful girls. Teammates of Team 1A, Rico Austin, Phil Niekro, Lisa Heim and Robert Carnahan had a decent showing at 8 under par with the Great Sponsor of Double Coin Tires and CMA (China Manufacturers Alliance). Gracias Amigas Tamara Atkins, Kat Hammontre, Amigo Cesar Quirarte & ALL the many other Amigas & Amigos Nuevos at El Dorado Ranch, Pavilion Restaurante, The Parrots Cracker Beach Bar & Grill, La Palapa Restaurant Bar & the entire loving community of San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico for YOUR Incredible, much appreciated, warm hospitality! I cannot wait 4 my return visit and the mention of this area in 1 or 2 of my new, upcoming books! Vayan Con Dios!
Facebook Games, I hate em’, I tried Farmville years ago and in just took way too much of my time, it was like farming and milking cows in real life, I had to pick strawberries at a certain time or they rotted, if I didn’t milk my cows in time I lost milk money, it was not a game! Now, why the F am I getting invites to play "Solitare in Wonderland" by other grown, hairy men? I am seriously thinking about changing my profile picture to the uglie selfie that I took while attending the NORRA Mexican 1000 on the Baja of Mexico to ward off these weird, unwelcomed invites to play games and other things that go on in the world of Facebook of which this standup guy wants no part of! EWWW, I feel so dirty!
Well, I was able to visit my home state of Idaho once again, see my Mother, Brothers, Aunts, Uncle and Cousins. Then a quick trip to McCall, to see my Cousin Johnny HoobyDooby Doo Hooven and his wife Jerie and children. Then over to Beside the Mill where I have some Chica Amigas awaiting to do shots of Tequila and then to my suite at the Hotel McCall for an afterhours fiesta! Funtastic Times in Boise, Idaho with Amigos & Amigas - Rich & Rhonda Collins, Tim & Susan Bundgard, Ron & Mary Faccio & Kent & Allie Klinger as Rich & Rhonda hosted a cocktail party in our honor,( well mostly Connie’s)!
We had a wonderful get together on the Golf Course for my Uncle Tom’s 3rd Annual Memorial Golf Tournament held in beautiful Wilder, Idaho next to the Snake River on Riverbend Golf Course. Two of my Brothers, and almost all of my Cousins, Uncle Dennie, numerous friends such as Steve Boyce, Dave Stephens, Rich Collins, Dan Taylor and many others came out to enjoy each other’s company and toast a shot of Fireball and a shot of Ten High Whiskey which were two of my Uncle Tom Hooven’s favorite drinks. We then all went to Marsing for a family picnic but not before going down to the Poor House where my cousin John Hooven bought all 50 or so of us a round of drinks. We did eventually show up at the Marsing Park where my mother, aunts and other relatives who did not participate in golf and shots had already eaten. YES, we were extremely tardy!
On our last evening before heading back to Sunny Scottsdale, Arizona, the Bungards invited Connie, Rhonda, Rich and I over for cocktails at their home on the Boise River. At the end of this Blog, You’ll see a photo of Connie enjoying a cerveza with Gracie & Granger (Bungard dogs) at Tim & Sue's!
Right before leaving Idaho, I experienced a sad moment in the life of a squirrel who had not looked before he leaped into traffic, therefore, here is a Public Service Announcement going out to all Boise, Meridian & Eagle Squirrels and fast drivers. Please my dear Squirrel friends, do not run into the streets with your nuts without first looking both directions. Fast & Texting Drivers, please be aware of Squirrels that are very busy gathering and storing nuts this time of year as some are concentrating on the coming winter and nothing else! Rico is the founding member of Watch Those Furry SQUIRRELS - WTF SQUIRRELS Organization! Spoiler Alert: Sad photos of dead squirrel at end of Blog.

“I wanted to read Mexico Got Lucky by Rico Austin simply because it was about a dog that was lost in Mexico. Having visited Mexico and seeing how most dogs are not treated properly, I was amazed at how much support Jim received from people there in assisting him to find Lucky. This story restored my faith in humanity.
I really enjoyed Mexico Got Lucky. Austin has shown me that there are still good people in the world. It was so obvious that Jim loved Lucky. He spent a ton of money and resources just to find Lucky. I would not do even half of what he did for some people in my life. Jim is an amazing person and I wish that I was a dog so he could own me. I would have lost faith after a month of not finding my dog, but Jim kept his faith for over seventy days.
This story is just not about finding a beloved, lost pet. It also is a history lesson. Austin has little bits of historical facts scattered throughout the book. I never knew that the Chow Chow is believed to be a model for the Foo dog. Of course, after reading this information, I do see the resemblance. The majority of Mexico Got Lucky is written as if you are reading in a chat room. This is because this is how people got involved in helping Jim find Lucky.
By writing the story like this, Austin gives the reader a front row seat of what is going on. It made me wish I had a keyboard so I could also type words of encouragement to Jim. From the very beginning I knew how the story was going to end, but the book held my attention. I needed to see what happened to Lucky and where he was. While reading Mexico Got Lucky, my neighbor’s dog went missing. This book gave me several ideas on how to assist in finding the dog. For that I want to thank Austin. I recommend this book for anyone who has ever had a pet.”
While on a business trip to San Diego I was able to take my nephew & amigo Cody Austin out for his Birthday Dinner (Surf and Turf) in Carlsbad, California at Coyote Bar & Grill. Very proud of what this young man has become, serving in the UNITED STATES NAVY at Camp Pendleton! I think he enjoyed it, as he took a photo of it! We couldn't eat it all, so Mr. Cody had some great leftovers for thehis next morning’s breakfast.
My Dear Amiga, the sweet Bonnie Lee, RIP has passed away on July 7th! She was an excellent friend and my editor for my last two books. I loved seeing her at the Tucson Festival of Books each & every year. Her reviews were always a welcome sight to eyes and sometimes gave me the inspiration to keep writing. She is the Lady that introduced me to another dear Amiga & fellow Author Lala Corriere whose heart is also breaking at this time; Vaya con Dios, Miss Bonnie! Xxoo
I did leave a tribute for Bonnie in MEXICO got LUCKY, “A special tribute goes out to my editor, Miss Bonnie Lee RIP, who passed away unexpectedly on July 7th, 2015, before I could send the manuscript of this story to receive her always, positive and welcomed feedback. You will be missed by many within the Literary World and the Wine World, both of which you loved dearly and were loved by.”
